What Does a Retaining Wall Do?

A retaining wall holds back soil so you can use ground that would otherwise be a slope. In North Georgia that usually means turning a steep backyard into level lawn or patio space, stopping erosion that washes soil and mulch downhill after storms, supporting a driveway edge, or replacing an old timber wall that has started to rot and lean.

How We Build Retaining Walls That Last

Georgia's red clay holds water, and saturated clay pushes hard against a wall. Most failed walls we replace never had a way to drain. Every New Life Outdoors wall includes:

  • Excavation to firm soil and a compacted gravel leveling base
  • Clean drainage aggregate behind the wall, not native clay backfill
  • A perforated drain pipe at the base that outlets away from the wall
  • Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls
  • A setback (batter) into the slope on every course
  • Secured capstones and grading that sends surface water away

Retaining Wall Types We Install

Segmental concrete block walls, natural stone and fieldstone walls, boulder walls, tiered terraces with planting beds, seat walls around patios and fire pits, and stone steps built into walls. We also remove and replace failing landscape-timber and railroad-tie walls.

Retaining walls are part of our full hardscapes service, and we often build them alongside landscaping, pool installation, and fencing projects. Contact us for a free estimate.

Retaining Wall FAQ

How much does a retaining wall cost in Georgia?
Most retaining walls we build run about $25–$50 per square foot of wall face. Height, length, material, drainage needs, engineering, and equipment access all affect the price. We provide a written estimate after visiting your property.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Georgia?
In most metro Atlanta jurisdictions, walls over about 4 feet tall (measured from the bottom of the footing) or walls supporting a driveway, structure, or additional slope need an engineered design and a building permit. We confirm the rules for your city or county and coordinate the engineering and permit.
Why do retaining walls fail in Georgia clay?
Usually because of water. Saturated red clay pushes hard against a wall. Without clean drainage stone, a drain pipe at the base, a compacted base, and reinforcement on taller walls, a wall will eventually lean, bulge, or crack.
What is the best retaining wall material?
Segmental concrete block is the most versatile choice for most homes. Natural stone and boulders suit wooded and older properties. We help you choose based on the wall's height, the look you want, and your budget.
Can you replace an old timber retaining wall?
Yes. We remove rotting landscape-timber and railroad-tie walls and rebuild with block or stone and new drainage, so the wall will not rot or fail the same way again.
How long does a retaining wall installation take?
Most residential walls take a few days to two weeks depending on size, access, weather, and whether engineering or permits are needed.
